Week 6 Storylab: Advice to Writers

I chose to do a Storylab again this week and went with the "Advice to Writers" again because I find it truly inspirational.

The first one I went with was "An Artist Needs Passion".  In this short, the writer says that kids that dream of pursuing art of any form:  dancers, musicians, artists, etc need to always have passion for the art they love.  They have chosen a career that is really, really hard & will pay very little for many years, if ever.  The only thing to keep you going in that time is passion for your art.  I believe this is true because if anyone ever pursues a dream career that isn't a common go to school, get a degree, get a regular job type of career, it's going to be hard.  It's going to take passion, belief in yourself & your abilities, and true grit & dedication.  Pursuing that kind of dream is hard.  It doesn't pay the bills very often, if ever.

Another one I liked was "Literature is Not High School."  This one says that you don't need to know what everyone else is doing because you don't want to be just like everyone else.  You don't need to fit in.  When a certain topic or style is insanely popular and everyone is writing it, you will be just another face in the crowd with nothing to make you stand out.  You want to be different.  You want to be you.  Bring your unique talents and perspectives to your writing.  Maybe it will never take off and make you rich or popular, but maybe it will.  JK Rowling did something very unique, drawing on inspiration from many places, and it took her many times trying to get her first book published, but we all know how that turned out for her in the end.  Be yourself & use your own unique gifts.

The last one I chose was "Fine Writing Helps Alleviate Suffering." This short says that life is crazy & there is always suffering in life.  But writing can help alleviate that suffering.  Getting your story onto paper or a computer will help you process that hurt & get it out of you.  Reading your story can help other people who have been through something similar.  If you use your suffering for something creative instead of your true story, you can pour yourself into this creative process.  You can lose yourself to it and make it into something beautiful that can touch lives everywhere.  Or maybe it's comedy, drama, mystery, romance, it could be anything that you chose to pour yourself into and it can not only alleviate your own suffering but bring an escape into other people's lives for a short time.  And that is valuable for everyone.
