Famous Last Words: Harry Potter, writing, and being an OU snob

Best writing for this week:  I'm really enjoying my Storybook project.  I was a little nervous about how I was actually going to accomplish what I wanted to and tie everything together, but once I sat down to write, it actually flowed really well.  Combining Harry Potter along with mythological horses/horse-hybrids is pretty fun.  You don't get to see a lot of those sorts of creatures really in the books or movies, outside of the Thestrals and Centaurs, but there are several in mythology to choose from and because Rowling mixes in all sorts of stories in the Potter series, it's a great way to weave your stories!  My best writing this semester is always my Storybook, in my opinion.  I've even discovered that if I want my weekly stories to be anything I can relate to or be proud of, I have to do them like my Storybook and use Harry Potter themes to make them work for me.  Anything I write without that theme just doesn't come out as creative for me.

I've been watching the Harry Potter movies off & on during this project, just for more inspiration.  I don't necessarily watch the ones that pertain to my topics, but just taking a trip back into the Potter world is enough to keep the creative juices flowing.  I wish I had time to go back & reread the books but outside of coursework, life in general, and other reading passions at the moment, I'm just not motivated to use my time reading books I've probably already read a dozen times each at the moment.

My writing always happens at the kitchen table.  I do only online courses because I don't live anywhere near Norman so my classroom is my kitchen.  I occasionally think about curling up on the couch to write, but I'm too lazy to move my laptop and my iPad doesn't work well for typing in my lap, even with the keyboard attached to it.  I remember seeing some commercial about a guy celebrating his kitchen table because that's where he got his degree, he was doing online courses for one of those questionable online universities.  I always laughed because that is exactly how my degree is going to go, except mine will be from OU, a major university, not some pretend online school.  And yes, I'm being a snob about it, but let's face it OU is much tougher and much more expensive than many of those fake universities out there.  And none of us would've picked OU if it wasn't the best--for whatever reason we decided it was the best for us.
